Project Overview

We worked with Aberdeen oil service company, Unity Well to migrate the management of their devices from on-site infrastructure to Microsoft’s cloud based Azure Active Directory.

Project Background

The client had had a legacy on-site Active Directory, which was used to authenticate the identity of staff and manage the domain-joined devices.

They began a programme of consolidating their office space and no longer wanted server infrastructure within the office.  Data and applications had already been moved to the cloud.

The Solution

We migrated the management of the devices from their on-site Active Directory to Azure Active Directory.  By using a cloud-based service the staff are able to logon seamlessly to any corporate device using their Microsoft Office 365 credentials, underpinned by Multi Factor Authentication.

Using Microsoft Endpoint Manager we designed several policies that allowed us to create consistent configurations that could be applied to all or a subset of corporate devices.  These included:

  • Printer installations
  • Wifi SSIDs (Service Set Identifier – the name of the company network)
  • Screen Saver Timeout

In addition, several baseline compliance policies were deployed to all corporate devices to ensure that the computers met essential security configurations.

Once implemented, the on-site server infrastructure was decommissioned.

The Challenges

On the whole, the project was implemented easily and efficiently.  The main challenges experienced were logistical ones of getting remote access to devices used by offshore based personnel and during a global pandemic!

The Outcome

The migration has helped Unity Well to improve productivity and save the costs of hosting their own infrastructure. Other benefits are:

  • Staff can now securely access corporate data from any location which has been enormously helpful with the increase in remote working.
  • Reduced business disruption caused by IT outages.
  • Substantial savings due to the elimination of all costs relating to on-site infrastructure including cooling, power and backup.
  • The ability to scale the cloud infrastructure to include the management of mobile and tablet devices.

Alto have been supporting Unity for a number of years with our IT systems. During the recent COVID-19 restrictions, when business continuity was crucial, Alto were able to provide the dedicated support we required. This included effective responses to challenges associated with remote working, additional hardware set ups and general IT support, while going through the same hardships themselves in dealing with the unprecedented situation we all find ourselves in.
